The schools in the Texas Early College High School Initiative are built on the core principles of the Early College High School model established by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. This model is supported and replicated at a national level by the Gates Early College High School Initiative and documented by Jobs for the Future in Boston, Massachusetts.
The Texas Early College High School Initiative began in 2004 when the first Early College High Schools funded by the Texas High School Project opened their doors. The Texas High School Project (THSP) is a unique public-private alliance dedicated to ensuring that all Texas students graduate high school ready for success in college, career, and life. The Alliance includes: Texas Education Agency, Texas Legislature, Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, Office of the Governor, Communities Foundation of Texas, Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Greater Texas Foundation, National Instruments, and the Wallace Foundation.
Since its inception, the Texas Early College High School Initiative has opened schools, disseminated information and best practices, and developed supportive policy for Early College High Schools in Texas. Through this initiative, the Texas Education Agency and the Communities Foundation of Texas have provided funding and support for more than twenty Early Colleges across the state.
The Office of State Initiatives at the Texas Education Agency facilitates TEA’s involvement in the Texas High School Project and the Texas Early College High School Initiative in particular. In addition to providing more than $12 million in funding for the development and replication of Early College High Schools across the state, TEA also provides support for the creation of resources, such as this website, to facilitate the development of quality Early College High Schools based on the Gates ECHS model.
